The Ethics of Waikiki Stand Up Paddlers Considered

Posted by admin - April 4th, 2012

Hang around the surf shops in Honolulu and you’ll likely hear a bunch of debate over stand up paddle devotees and traditional surfer’s ethics. Surf ethics may sound like a misnomer, but it’s really about etiquette. There is no question that stand up paddle has become incredibly popular in Waikiki and all over, but the manner in SUP riders share waves has come under scrutiny. Just as newbie surfers make mistakes out in the lineup there first season, SUPers are bound to make some mistakes. Just remember that you were a newbie once and also made these mistakes. There is no need for attitude out in the ocean. Come to Honolulu and get a surf rental in Waikiki if you want to avoid any chance of stink eye from the surfers or a better idea is to take stand up paddle lessons in Waikiki and learn all the basics of paddling and you’ll have a better time than any of those surfers out there.
